Words Without Stories
A book for people with advanced dementia.
-
My mum used to love reading, but sadly got to the point where she could no longer read a whole page, or follow a story.
She would still read greetings cards and short sentences, though!I looked for a book that would be suitable and found them
- too wordy
- too aimed at ‘children’
- too American (I’ve nothing against the US, but I wanted UK spelling!).
So, I created “Words Without Stories” to be a series of eye-catching images, with captions.
- It’s a slim paperback, so she can hold it easily.
- It’s short.
- It’s got big print.
It’s not designed to be read, in the traditional sense. It's also an aid to help ME (or you, as the accompanying reader) to spark a conversation.Hopefully also being a guide as to
- what images catch interest (if any do)
- what level of reading your loved one is at
- whether they can tell the time/recognise clocks
- whether they can answer questions
"Words Without Stories" has been written specifically with those with advanced dementia in mind. People who maybe used to enjoy reading, but can now only manage short sentences.
It consists of a series of 30 images, with captions, to be enjoyed together with the reader's family member, friend or caregiver.
£1 from each book sold goes to Alzheimer’s Society.
