Considering Affirmations
When my mum first developed dementia, I read up quite a lot on labelling cupboards, and making large notes and reminders for her. I can’t say that she ever seemed to take any notice, and she would still either be able to do something, or not. Or remember something, or not. Having ‘information’ printed up did not seem to help.
For a while I thought she perhaps couldn’t actually read any more, but a medication change in 2022 transformed her, and it became very evident that she could and would read, as she would study greetings cards, and read words and short sentences from them. (It was this that inspired me to create the Words Without Stories book for her).
Most of the prints available in the store are as much about the person living with dementia as they are for them. Honouring who they used to be, and at the same time accepting who they are now. But, given I know that my mum can and does read, I am now considering a range that taps into this, and making positive statements to go on her wall, in simple, easy to read fonts.
If there’s one thing any of us need in this world, it’s reassurance, so any way I can think of bringing that into my mum’s world has got to be worth a try. If there’s even a chance I can bring positive reinforcement into her day, it will be worthwhile.
She has a wall opposite her bed/chair that will be the perfect place to hang this, or maybe a small collection - which does mean they need to be A3 rather than A4, to make sure she can read them from a short distance.
I would welcome ideas for other positive statements you feel someone living with dementia may find reassuring, as I am considering a whole ‘Alzheimer’s Affirmations’ range. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in this one, you’ll have to comment below, let me know on our Facebook page, or email me, as it’s not available yet.
Much love,
Anna
